FLAC and UDEC for Geomechanics and Reservoir Engineering

The main objective of this course is demonstrating the implementation of numerical modeling and geomechanics simulation in reservoir engineering. The course focuses on the practical applications of numerical modeling for simulation and analysis of geomechanics problems such as wellbore stability, geothermal analysis, flow analysis, and hydraulic fracturing. Several topics including elasticity and plasticity of the rock medium, constitutive models, stress distribution, and permeability considerations will be discussed. The simulation procedure of isotropic and transversely isotropic medium and faults and discontinuities will be presented. Commercial programs for geomechanics modeling will be introduced, and finite difference, finite element, and distinct element methods for numerical modeling will be described. Different software tools including FLAC, FLAC3D, and UDEC will be considered for conducting simulations.

  • Basic Schedule: Day 1 - Introduction; Day 2 – Site Response; Day 3 – Advanced Topics

  • Course materials provided:
    • presentation PDF files,
    • digital PDF library of related references,
    • completed FLAC project and Python/Jupyter files,
    • multiple custom FLAC/FISH scripts for conducting site response and ground motion selection and modification related work,
    • unlisted YouTube playlist of all course videos during and shortly after course completion
  • Instructor available during the training period for follow-up questions
  • A full FLAC 8.1 version will be available during the duration of the course (provided courtesy of Itasca Consulting Group Inc.)
  • Size capped at 15 participants

FLAC for Dynamic Analysis & Earthquake Engineering

In this course, the procedure of fully dynamic analysis using FLAC and FLAC3D programs as powerful numerical modeling tools based on the finite difference method will be presented. Both 2D and 3D analysis procedures will be demonstrated. Several topics including model development, earthquake loading, dynamic boundary conditions, assignment of soil dynamic properties to the numerical models, and seismic response analysis will be discussed.
